Pre-Conference Workshop: Understanding Network Science

Everyone talks about "networking" – we plan and go to networking events, we tell students and alumni about the importance of networking, and of course, we participate in online and real-world social networks. But do we really know what a "network" is? The developing field of network science shows us how groups of people (such as alumni, donors and students) are structured, and more importantly, how understanding that structure can help us achieve important goals. Recognizing how networks work helps us engage audience members in our mission, generate awareness for our institutions' needs, and reveals connections that make our communications and solicitations more effective. This 2-hour interactive workshop explains in plain English the components of human networks, and shows how understanding these structures helps advancement professionals use social media, events, and databases more effectively.

You will learn:

  • Why weak network ties are more valuable than strong ones
  • The truth about "six degrees of separation”
  • The single characteristic that makes bigger networks "more valuable” to an individual
  • Whether it’s true that humans can really only have 150 close connections
  • How people spend most of their time on Facebook, and why it matters, and

Current students are heavily involved in the college’s and university’s activities, and thus are the perfect people to tell prospective new students and their families about the opportunities that your college offers. High school career days, job fairs, class presentations, and club meetings are perfect venues for prospective students to find out about admissions requirements, financial aid opportunities, and what it is like to be a member of your college family – straight from the horse’s mouth. In this workshop you will learn about the high school visit program at Texas Tech University, and how you can implement one into your college’s recruiting plan.

Note: this session is designed for experienced internet users and is not intended to focus on social media.


Creating Award-Winning Marketing and Communications Tools for Your College

A Case Study for Aligning the Stars – How All Advancement Areas are Critical to Implementing Strategic, College-wide Change

Undergraduate education is often a critical flashpoint, especially given the myriad of internal and external stakeholders with vested interests. The College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences has engaged in a significant, college-wide strategic planning process for undergraduate education over the last three years. Sparked by changing demographic trends, shifting university priorities, and emerging opportunities, the effort has focused on how to better prepare students for success given evolving workforce realities and the needs of employers, stakeholders, and our local and global communities. The strategic plan has not been without controversy. This session focuses on how a team-based advancement approach navigated the complex change process to align the stars and make it all possible – including managing internal and external communications, involving alumni and employers, working with current and prospective students, and reframing work with donors.


How Your Volunteers Can Reach For the Sky

In this session we are going to discuss volunteers, and why they are vital to all organizations and the events that they help host. As volunteers we need to know the characteristics of an effective volunteer and the role we play in different organizations activities. We will discuss how volunteers are recruited, trained and selected at our different universities and how they can enhance our alumni organizations. We will discuss the major activities from our different schools, (that we will have copies of) and how we play a part in the activity from planning to recognition.


ACTIONS (Alumni Connecting To Involved and Outstanding New Students)

Recruitment is the life blood for any organization, and our colleges and universities are not exceptions. In these challenging economic times, how can you be efficient and maximize the return on your recruitment dollar? One critical key is an effective network of alumni volunteers. This session will use Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College’s ACTIONS Team to explore efforts to recruit, equip and engage a network of alumni volunteers to help in the student recruitment process. ACTIONS (Alumni Connecting To Interested and Outstanding New Students) is the alumni-based student recruiting effort designed to train and equip volunteers to identify and attract academically talented and engaged students to ABAC. All NAADA tracks will benefit from this engagement strategy.


Growing Grassroots II - Using Your Brand, and Your Base, to Secure Your Funds

With current economic challenges and intense competition for public funds, it is more important than ever for organizations to advance brand recognition with target audiences and engage stakeholders. The Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences invested in improving communications and marketing initiatives with much success, but there exists significant unrealized opportunities within Extension to capitalize on this effort. This session will review Extension’s uniqueness and brand identity and discuss methods to enhance brand recognition with key audiences. It will also include strategies to effectively engage college stakeholders (alumni, donors, industry representatives, and students) in an effort to strengthen that brand while seeking funding support for agricultural extension and research programs. This is a follow-up to last year’s advocacy session.


Annual Fund to Major Gift

Career Services – Utilizing Technology to Enhance Career Services

Getting more done with less is an ever increasing task in Career Services, especially in a less than optimal economic time. Do you really have the time to meet with every student to help them develop their career goals and options? Is it possible to develop a blanket career guide for every student when you have a small budget or even a large one at the college or university level? From texting to snail mail with video resumes and job search sites in between, come learn what you can do to make every student interaction (whether direct or not) unique and impactful with the help and utilization of technology.


The True Truth on Trust

Beg, Borrow and Steal Sessions
Building on a NAADA tradition, this year’s conference again provides a session for idea sharing. The session facilitator will frame the discussion with a few topics of interest or in some cases a specific issue. However, this time is designated for advancement professionals, new and experienced alike, to share ideas or issues and solicit the group for assistance. Please come ready to discuss pressing topics of interest and learn the best practices that you can apply at your institution.

Generations at Work

Generations at Work – dealing with the generation mix in today’s workforce. Research is showing us that generation gaps in the workforce are growing further and further apart. By now, many managers have learned the art of managing the generation X employee but few have learned how to tolerate the generation Y employee. In order for businesses to succeed in the new economy they must be willing to meet the needs of different generations and give up on the one-size-fits-all employment practices. We work hard to understand the issues facing the generation X and Y employees as well as the frustrations boomers have with the generation mix. Our organization works extensively with all generations and will help you to understand your role in this new talent war. We are a generation laboratory of sorts employing trainers and facilitators from all three generations. We seek to help organizations find the commonalities as well as to value the differences that each unique generation brings.

Specifically we will discuss:

  • How to identify generation gaps in the workplace
  • Misconceptions of Generation X & Y
