Smithsonian National Zoo Tour

Ever wonder what it’s like to work at a zoo? Join Rebecca Miller, a Penn State graduate and Animal Keeper at the Smithsonian National Zoo, and Tameka Phillips, an Illinois alumna and a Gamete Research Specialist at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, for a look at the newly opened American Trail and to learn about zoo research. On this tour, we’ll highlight the zoo’s charismatic and energetic California sea lions. Watch how staff trains the sea lions and learn more about these beautiful marine mammals. Then, go behind-the-scenes for an up close view of various animal exhibits! (Space is limited)

National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden and Greenhouse Tour

Designed to offer year-round enjoyment to the public in one of the preeminent locations on the National Mall, the National Gallery Sculpture Garden includes eighteen works from the Gallery’s growing collection as well as loans for special exhibitions. The garden also includes an extensive and exquisite landscape of canopy trees, flowering trees, shrubs, ground covers, and perennials. Join us for a private tour conducted by Jeff Nagle, Sculpture Garden Manager, and Penn State graduate, who will discuss the history of the garden, the plantings and sculptures. Attendees also will go behind-the-scenes for a tour of the National Gallery of Art Greenhouses led by Greenhouse Manager, Solomon Foster, to learn the inside scoop on the vital role the greenhouses play in supporting the National Gallery of Art’s extensive plant environment. (Space is limited)

U.S. Botanic Garden Tour

Steeped in history, rich with tradition, the United States Botanic Garden (USBG) is a living plant museum that informs visitors about the importance, and often irreplaceable value, of plants to the well-being of humans and to earth’s fragile ecosystems. Since its earliest incarnation in 1816, the USBG has maintained a strong focus on the many economic plants important to the welfare of the American people. Join Dr. Ari Novy, Public Programs Manager of the USBG, on an exquisite tour of the greenhouses and gardens highlighting agricultural, economic and other interesting plants. (Space is limited)

Urban Forestry Tour

Casey Trees is a Washington, D.C. based, community and urban forestry nonprofit committed to restoring, enhancing and protecting the tree canopy of our nation’s capital. Participants attending the Casey Trees session will be given a guided tour of our headquarters and the "green” features that qualify the building as a Sustainable Site. This tour will also visit Casey Trees projects in the field. Participants will meet community members to hear their stories and what motivated them to advocate for tree plantings in their neighborhoods. (Space is limited)
