NAADA Connections

From the President

Jamie Lucero, NAADA President

NAADA colleagues,

Greetings from Virginia Tech. We are wrapping up summer here with a 91% view of the solar eclipse yesterday and classes beginning next Monday.  We seem to be a week behind many of you with the start of the fall semester.  I hope all of your student welcome events have gone well!

For me, the start of the fall semester is the beginning of a new year…not July 1 fiscal year or even January 1. Fall semester is when I purchase a new planner, map out the coming year of events and programs, and set goals for the year.  NAADA participation is always a part of that annual planning process.

This month’s issue is full of ways to kick off your “New Year” with NAADA.

  • Membership renewals have been emailed. But before you click on the same level as last year, take a look at your team. Does everyone on your team have easy access to all of the online NAADA resources by having their own log in and password?  If you bumped your membership up one level could you provide the many benefits of NAADA to another member of the team?  Do you have any of your volunteers on your membership list so they can better understand our profession?
  • Add the dates for the annual conference in Boise, Idaho to your personal and team calendars.  Can you budget to bring one more member of the team to the conference this year?  Virginia Tech has been bringing volunteers and additional staff members to the conference for a few years now. It has made tremendous positive impacts on our alumni organization programming and the strategies of our advancement team.
  • The call for conference education session submissions is in this issue.  Share the good work going on in your shop with your NAADA colleagues.
  • Send a note out on your track listserv. Welcome new members, share a highlight of a successful program, pose a question to your colleagues, etc.
  • Join the conversations happening on social media.
  • Make time to watch a session recording from the Ohio State conference.

I know it seems like a long list but each and every action item will be worth the time!

The NAADA board meeting is in mid-September. A few of our agenda items are selecting the 2019 conference host, adopting our 2017-18 work plan, and approving this year’s budget. Please share any ideas or concerns with me or your track representative. We welcome your input.

Best wishes for an outstanding start to the fall semester!

P.S.  Have you talked to your NAADA buddy lately?  Give them a call!
