NAADA Connections

From the President

Jamie Lucero, NAADA President

Greetings from Virginia Tech.

We have finally seen our leaves turn and the air is crisp. Here in Blacksburg we are at that point in the semester where we are wishing for a free weekend. We love our football but we could all use some downtime with family and friends.

In our advancement office we are organizing our mailing lists for Thanksgiving cards to our volunteers and donors.  It’s such an important stewardship step beyond the thank you letters for a gift or help at an event.  I’d like to propose we use NAADA’s Facebook page over the next couple of weeks to share best practices of stewardship around the holidays. Do you send cards, gifts, etc.? When do you send these throughout the year?  I know there are some unique and thoughtful practices out there…please take a moment to share by posting on the Facebook page, or sending an e-mail to

With this president’s message I want to share my appreciation with all of you for the time, talent, and treasure you devote to our organization.  I’ve said it many times, but it remains true – our organization is only as strong as our members.  Without the dedication of our board members, committee chairs, and committee members we wouldn’t be able to do the work we do.  Committees are ramping up their meetings and digging into the work plan.  We have seen a record number of session proposals for the 2018 conference in Boise.  Membership renewals are strong and we’re looking forward to welcoming new members to our community. NAADA veterans, please consider writing a note of welcome to new members, who are listed at the bottom of each newsletter.

We are wrapping up 2017 a financially sound and vibrant organization full of hardworking and dedicated members.  I’m proud to play a small part and thank you for the part you play.

All the best,

Consider NAADA in Your Year-end Giving Plans

Your contributions to NAADA directly impact the NAADA family. 100% of contributions to our endowment funds are used in accordance with the fund agreements. In the past year, endowment funds have been used to:

  • Support educational programming at the NAADA Conference.
  • Fund the Jane Longley-Cook Volunteer Fellowship Award, used to encourage participation from our valued volunteers by offsetting registration and lodging costs to attend the annual conference.
  • Support the NAADA Individual Awards Program, including covering recipient travel costs (when requested) and capturing high quality video of the event.

As a registered 501c3, personal contributions to NAADA can be written-off on your income tax filing and can help lower your taxable income level.

When considering organizations to support at year-end, support NAADA.

2017 Conference Session Highlight

Best Practices of Alumni/Student Mentoring Programs

Kirby Player, Director of College Relations College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences, Clemson University
Fellow Clemson Staff

This lively and interactive presentation proposes that all NAADA professional tracks are connected within an advancement Circle of Life model that begins with prospective students and rejoins with donor capstone gifts. Clemson University’s model reveals that intentional, connected internal and external relationships foster successful advancement in each model segment. Practical shared values and ideas for integrating Circle of Life principles/philosophies will be offered. Methods for meeting challenges to success such as uninformed/unsupportive administrators, turnover in personnel, and limited resources will be considered. Through paired and group discussions, participants will examine their institutions' model of advancement and consider the roles and relationships between student, alumni, communications, and development professionals. Today’s world of advancement often breeds a “survival of the fittest” mentality or a linear view that creates hierarchy within organizations. This presentation promotes the idea that harmony and individual/organizational success can coexist and thrive within a Circle of Life Advancement Model.
